I believe that as Christians we are called to be part of a community. In the past the church has served this purpose. I believe, though, that we must come to a more original understanding of community.
The early church was more than just a community that came together to worship. They lived together and relied on each other for survival. Everything was shared amongst the community. To live this way nowadays is to be called a hippie or worse a Communist. I am sorry to blow peoples’ minds, but I think that the early church showed many signs of Communism. They shared all and everyone was treated equally. These are the true signs of a healthy community.
While churches may still serve as a place for many to have their community of believers, I desire to live more fully in a community. A community of Christians offers support at all times. It also offers accountability. How can we grow closer to God if we have no one to confess to and no one to share our temptations with? It is impossible. We must have a close community that offers us this.
We value individuality too much and independence as well. We must all come to realize that we are interdependent and that we are meant by God to live in community. Jesus surrounded himself with friends and lived in community with them. They shared all equally and loved all together.
